For AdultsADULT EDUCATION CLASS AND RESOURCE INFORMATION
NEW SELF-STUDY RESOURCE: USE THE BIBLE SEARCH BOX BELOW FOR ASSISTANCE WITH PERSONAL INQUIRIES AND INTERESTS OR AS AN AID TO YOUR ADULT EDUCATION COURSE OF STUDY. YOU MAY SELECT WHICH TRANSLATION OF THE BIBLE YOU WANT TO USE. YOU MAY ALSO SEARCH THE SAME WORD, CITATION, OR PHRASE IN MULTIPLE VERSIONS TO SEE HOW THEY DIFFER.
FAMILIAR BIBLE PASSAGES - SEARCH FOR THEM TO FIND THEIR CONTEXT AS A SELF-STUDY PROJECT.
(Quotations are King James Version.) NOTE: You can enter just a portion of the saying to avoid typing mistakes. It is also fun to enter just the most unique word or partial phrase because you may find additional similar passages.
BREAD AND THE BIBLE
If you have always wanted to read the whole bible but thought that it was too daunting a task, try studying the importance of BREAD:
1. If you enter "bread" in the Bible search box (King James Version), you will receive 462 quotations, including quotes of both "bread" and "breadth". If you read all of these through sequentially, you will have traversed the whole Bible and will have hit most of the highlights.
2 If you enter "bread " (bread with a space after it), you will eliminate the "breadth" quotations and will have reduced the number of search result quotations to 204. Even this number of samples will give you a good abbreviated reading of the Bible.
3. Why do you think that you find many very similar quotations? Did the writer(s) of the sections with multiple repetitions feel that you wouldn't understand what they were saying if they said it only once?

Lenten Study by E-mail: The Disturbing Sayings of Jesus
This year's Lenten Study by E-mail was a great success, with approximately 88 participants from many states plus the UK and a spectrum of church denominations. This was our fifth year in this ongoing series, and because of the subject matter, it was marked by significant online discussions of many of the daily reflections. Prior to the start of Lent 2011, we hope to have a book available for purchase that will chronicle the first five years of this series and provide instructions to other churches that want to initiate their own series based on our experiences and content. Please contact Karen Wells, karen@northbrookumc.org if you want to be on the mailing list for information about the new book or if you wish to participate in our Lenten Study by E-mail next year.
New Class: Exploring the Wisdom of Jesus
This class meets Tuesdays at 7:00 pm at Northbrook United Methodist Church for six weeks starting April 11, 2010. The teacher is Dan Lloyd, and the class explores the content of Wisdom Jesus, by Cynthia Bourgeault. Rev. Bourgeault believes that Jesus came first and foremost as a teacher of the path of inner transformation. Section One of the book covers the teachings of Jesus. Section Two covers the mysteries of Jesus, Section Three touches on Christian wisdom practices.
