Worship

Everyone is invited to worship with us at Northbrook UMC! We have one worship service on Sunday mornings, which begins at 10:00 a.m. Our worship is a blended traditional worship service, accompanied by the organ, with music from multiple traditions – ranging from gospel, contemporary Christian, classic hymns, and more!

Communion

On the first Sunday we take Holy Communion. In the Wesleyan tradition, the Lord’s Table is open to all, no matter your age, denominational affiliation, or point in your spiritual journey. This is a gift offered to all of God’s people!

Worship Schedule

Slow Down You Move too Fast …Worship, Wednesdays, and Weekly groups during Lent

Do you feel like you are constantly racing to keep up?  Do you move faster only to be further behind?  Is life racing past you?  Are you trying to do more and more things with less and less time?

Do you long to slow down and savor life?  Are you looking for time to focus on what really matters?  Would you like room to breathe and rest in your every day life?  Join us for worship during Lent as we explore the theme of:  Addicted to Hurry

Lenten worship begins on February 22 with our      7:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday service.

February 26 - Stuck in the Brickyard – Exodus 1:8-14

How can the practice of Sabbath remind us that we are free from the crushing schedules we impose on ourselves?

March 4 – Racing to Nowhere – Genesis 11:1-9

How much of our time do we spend in the search for prosperity and success?  Is that search the best use of our time?

March 11 – Dodging Pain -- Matthew 26:36-46

We crowd our time with many activities so that we can avoid feeling the depth of our sorrow or anxiety.  How can prayer help us?

March 18 – Outrunning Death – Ecclesiastes 3:16-22

We are each mortal but we sometimes act as if a full calendar will defy the laws of nature.  How can embracing our mortality let us fully enjoy life in the here and now?

March 25 – Running from God – Jonah 1

We are addicted to hurry because we are running from God.  Through repentance we are “caught” by God and then able to get our lives back on track.

Advent 2011

During this season of Advent we are using paintings by John August Swanson to think again about the nativity stories.  John August Swanson is known for his brightly colored and finely detailed paintings and prints.  Drawing on the artistic traditions of  his mother's Mexico and his father's Sweden, and the way mosaics and stained glass from the Byzantine and Medieval eras communicated Biblical stories, his art offers viewers a fresh perspective of familiar biblical scenes and stories.  Click Here to go to John August Swanson's website to see his art work.

December 21, 2011 Longest Night -- The Flight

This is a worship service that makes room for those for whom this season is particularly difficult.  On this longest night of the year we acknowledge the way we have known shadow -- the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, illness, addiction, divorce -- and that we long for the light of Christ.

We are regularly bombarded by competing messages of reality.  In this series we use reality tv series as a jumping off point to explore how we might more closely align our reality with God's.
