THE ADULT BIBLE CLASS 2012

Our Adult Bible Class is held every Sunday at 8:30 a.m. in the library.  Each class member receives an outline of each lecture and a reading list. But, each individual is on their own to study the outline and do their own readings. We have no exams, but a lot of fellowship. We listen to two 30 minute lectures each week. This 48 Lecture class will take 24 weeks to complete. Since most lectures stand on their own, you do not have to make a commitment to attend all classes.  Everyone is welcome

LENTEN STUDIES BY EMAIL

Our Lenten Bible Study by Email continues into 2012 for the seventh year of this series, which allows people from Northbrook UMC to share their understandings of Bible passages with people from many kinds of churches and many distant locations. Karen Wells is our Course Administrator, and she will be looking for people who want to participate, either as an Affirmer, who writes a reflection on one Bible passage to share with everyone else in the course, or as a Responder, who receives all of the daily reflections and is free to comment on any or all of them. Please contact Karen (karen@northbrookumc.org) if you want to join us for this year’s course: The Gospel of Mark, the Scribe for Peter.

For those of you who are past course participants and Messenger readers from other churches, you can start a similar Email Study in your church by downloading an eBook with the course materials and instructions for running the project from Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble or other major online sources. Courses from the first five years are currently available. They may be used in any sequence:

Email Jesus: Course One: 40 Questions in the Gospel of John

Email Jesus: Course Two: Jesus Teaches Us to Pray

Email Jesus: Course Three: The Parables of Jesus

Email Jesus: Course Four: God’s Promises and the Beatitudes

Email Jesus: Course Five: The Disturbing Sayings of Jesus

These are all listed with Richard Davidson as the author. The courses for last year and this year will soon be published also.

SMALL GROUPS to study Addicted to Hurry by Kirk Jones

We will soon start Small Group studies of an intriguing book called Addicted to Hurry.  During Lent, in worship and in small group study, we will focus on Addicted to HurrySpiritual Strategies for Slowing Down.  In this book, Jones debunks the “need for speed” mentality that so many in our society embrace today.  Sign-Up’s will be in Penberthy Hall, and if you are interested in leading a group, please contact Pastor Melissa or Chris Greulich.

Jones first analyzes what he calls the “Idolatry of Speed”, and then offers an alternative which he describes as “The Sacred Savoring Pace”.  Each of the ten chapters in the book ends with a list of questions to help the reader identify the “hurry” in his or her life, and to help create more a more peaceful, satisfying and ultimately spiritual life.

Addicted to Hurry goes beyond social and psychological analysis to include spiritual perspectives on the danger of letting hurry become a chronic condition.  The book proposes the following:   (1) “Hurry” is not an inevitable consequence of modern life.  (2)  Chronic hurry is a serious malady of mind, heart, and soul putting at risk our relationship with God, each other and ourselves.

The author, Kirk Byron Jones D. Min., Ph.D., brings his perspective of 20 years as pastor, and his current role as teacher of social ethics and pastoral ministry at Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Center, Massachusetts.  He has written several books.
